I received a vehicle sticker that has very little adhesive and won't stick to my windshield. What do I do?

You have two options for receiving a new sticker:
You can call us at 312-742-9200 or 312-744-6774 or email cityclerk@cityofchicago.org and we will mail you a free replacement right away. Once you receive the replacement, please mail in the defective sticker to:

Bring the sticker and your original purchase receipt to a City Clerk office location (City Hall at 121 N. LaSalle or our satellite offices at 5674 S. Archer or 5430 W Gale St.) for a free replacement sticker. Our offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and our 2 satellite offices are also open Saturdays from 9 a.m. – Noon.
To avoid waiting in any line, please inform staff when you arrive that you need a replacement sticker for this reason. Also, if possible, please let us know where and when you purchased your sticker so we may look further into it.

When do vehicle stickers need to be displayed?

The 2010-2011 city vehicle sticker must be displayed by July 15. City Clerk del Valle provides a two week grace period before enforcement begins July 16.

How can I pay for my vehicle sticker?

If purchasing your sticker online, you can pay with a Visa, Mastercard or Discover debit or credit card.
If purchasing by mail with a renewal notice, you should send a check or money order for the exact amount of your purchase made payable to City Clerk. You must include your driver's license number and telephone number on the check.
If purchasing in person at a City Clerk office location, you can pay with cash, credit or debit card with photo ID (Visa, Mastercard, Discover Card, American Express) or check or money order. The check must include your driver's license number and telephone number.
Please note that retail vendors may have different payment methods.

I ordered my sticker online or by mail and have not received it. What do I do?

If you ordered your sticker online, please allow up to 14 business to receive it in the mail.
If your sticker was ordered by mail, please allow 20-30 business days to recieve it.

I no longer own the vehicle listed on the renewal notice. What should I do?

If your vehicle was replaced by a new one please make the changes on the renewal form and mail the form and your payment to the address listed. Or, you can simply enter your new information in the appropriate fields when purchasing your sticker online. If you no longer own a vehicle at all, simply disregard the renewal notice.

What is an LP sticker?

A LP vehicle sticker stands for Larger Passenger (LP) and is designated for vehicles (vehicles, vans and sport utility vehicles) with a curb weight of 4,500 lbs. or more. View the list of vehicles that qualify as larger passenger vehicles here.

My renewal form shows my car listed as a larger passenger vehicle but it really isn’t. What should I do?

In order to change the classification of your vehicle, you must bring a copy of your vehicle insurance or registration information to verify the make, model and curb weight of your vehicle to one of our offices or vendor locations. I just moved to Chicago. How do I get a sticker?

Our office allows a 30-day grace period from when you move to the city before we assess a late fee. Bring in a copy of your valid lease or mortgage and a Driver’s License or state ID to any sales location. If it is after 30 days, bring in a Driver’s License or state ID and state plate registration. A late fee of $40 will be assessed for vehicle stickers purchased after the 30-day grace period.
To waive the late fee or to receive a prorated fee, only the date on the following documents can be used: lease, title/mortgage, vehicle registration date, auto dealer bill of sale, vehicle title, IDOR vehicle tax forms.

I bought a new vehicle from someone and a current vehicle sticker was already in the window. Can I change the name and address on it so the renewal is mailed to me?

Stickers are not transferable between two different parties. You must return the existing vehicle sticker to the person you purchased the vehicle from. You must then purchase a sticker for yourself online or in person at one of our community vendors.

I purchased a new vehicle. Can I transfer my old vehicle sticker to the new vehicle?

Vehicle stickers are transferable. You must bring into a City Clerk's office the old sticker and receipt, and sales documentation on new vehicle. If vehicles are with in the same sticker classification the fee is $20.00, otherwise upgrade fee may be applied.

I just purchased a new vehicle. How long do I have before I need to buy a sticker?

You have 30 days from the day you purchased your new vehicle to purchase a vehicle sticker. After the 30 day grace period, a late fee may be assessed.
To purchase a vehicle sticker for a new vehicle, bring a copy of your bill of sale (if bought from a dealer) or proof of Transfer of Title from the Secretary of State (if bought from a private owner) along with your temporary plate registration and a Drivers license or State ID to any sales location.

I am a senior. Can I still get my discount on a vehicle determined a large passenger?

Vehicles in both the smaller and larger passenger classification qualify for the senior discount. Persons 65 years and older with a valid Illinois drivers license are eligible for the discount on one vehicle in either passenger type. You may purchase a Senior discounted sticker online only with the use of a renewal form number.

I am over 65 but my Driver’s License is from another state. Do I still qualify for the senior discount?

You must obtain an Illinois Driver’s License in order to obtain a senior discount. You can purchase a vehicle sticker at the full rate with an out-of-state drivers license.

My vehicle is registered to another state and I live in the city only a portion of the year. Do I need a vehicle sticker from Chicago also?

Yes, you do need to purchase a vehicle sticker. Regardless of where your vehicle is registered, as long as you reside or your vehicle is principally garaged within the city limits, you are required to have a vehicle sticker.

I have an out-of-state Driver’s License and out-of-state plates. What do you need from me or what should I fill out on my renewal form?

Even though you have an out of state plates and drivers license, you must still purchase a vehicle sticker. When purchasing your sticker online, simply fill in the fields with your out of state information and your current Chicago address. If you are mailing in your renewal form, please confirm that the information on the form is correct.
If you are purchasing your sticker in person, you must bring proof of current address along with a photo ID. Acceptable documents to indicate your current address are: mortgage or lease; water, tax, gas or electric bill; land line phone bill; or your satellite or cable television bill.

I put my sticker on the wrong vehicle. What should I do?

Vehicle stickers are now customized for each specific car and include your license plate number. Because of this, you need a new vehicle sticker. You can obtain a replacement sticker at our City Hall or Satellite Office locations for a fee of $30.

I bought a sticker for my vehicle and then got rid of the vehicle. Can I obtain a refund?

No, you are not eligible for a sticker refund. Refunds are only issued on duplicate or incorrect sticker type purchases.

I am moving out of Chicago in a few weeks/months. Can I just purchase a temporary sticker or get a refund on a portion of the sticker after I move?

You will have to purchase the regular sticker or risk being ticketed until you move. We do not sell temporary stickers and refunds are not given if you move out of the city.
