Statement from City Clerk Susana Mendoza on Illinois SB 957 – Drivers’ Licenses for All Drivers

“I commend the House Transportation Committee for their leadership in moving SB 957 to the House floor for a full vote. I urge my former House colleagues to vote in favor of this vital piece of legislation that will allow immigrants the opportunity to come forward and comply with the law.

We all know that legal drivers are safer drivers. What I see every day in my Office are drivers who are complying with the City wheel tax and buying their City Vehicle Sticker without a driver’s license. These drivers have demonstrated their willingness to do the right thing and SB 957 will give them the opportunity to be properly tested and insured to drive legally on our roads by obtaining a Temporary Visitor Driver’s License.

This legislation will help the Office of the Chicago City Clerk to ensure that all drivers in the city are notified of the need to purchase a City Sticker. It also provides us with the ability to confirm the legality of all drivers and to better enforce driving and parking laws.

SB 957 is an important step in making Chicago and Illinois more immigrant-friendly and I applaud the continuing hard work of our state leadership in moving this legislation forward.”
