Office of the Chicago City Clerk Investigation

                                   fraudulent stickers

How To Identify A Fraudulent City Sticker :
The Office of the Chicago City Clerk currently has an investigative unit that handles constituent complaints and suggestions throughout the city. If you know of someone who lives in the city and does not have a vehicle sticker on their car, or you know of a car that is parked in a residential permit parking zone and does not belong to a resident of that block, contact our staff by calling 312-742-9217

On Tuesday, November 13, 2007, City Clerk Miguel del Valle introduced an ordinance
to stiffen penalties for the sale and purchase of fraudulent stickers. To protect residents from falling victim to this deceptive practice, vehicle stickers should only be purchased at an authorized vendor and should never be purchased at a lower price. If you suspect a vehicle sticker is fraudulent, please notify the City Clerk’s Investigations Division by calling 312-742-9217. If you witness the unauthorized sale of a vehicle sticker, call 911.

There are identifying security features on a vehicle sticker that can help determine its authenticity:

• Hologram: There is a ¼” Hologram imprinted with the City Seal attached to one edge
of the City Sticker. Holograms give the illusion of a solid object that changes appearance and sometimes seems to move when viewed from slightly different angles and sources of light. Holograms are very difficult to replicate. If someone tries to make a photocopy, the metallic material will not have a shiny appearance.

• 8 Color Process:The Label material and inks used to replicate the winning artwork are virtually identical. The colors are vibrant and long lasting. A color copier or scanner cannot replicate the colors accurately.

• Security Slits:The Label Die has a series of slits that cut through the label material but not the liner. These slits ensure that the sticker will destroy itself upon removal.

• Adhesive: A semi permanent adhesive is applied to the label to ensure that it remains securely attached to the windshield of the vehicle for at least one year.
